Board Governance

What a Trustee Does

Behind every week of camp are people most campers never meet. Trustees keep Bass Lake true to Scripture, care for its grounds and buildings, and manage its resources wisely, so the camp is ready when each camper arrives.

It's quiet work, and few roles do more to help the next generation meet Christ. The Board of Trustees governs Bass Lake Camp, guards its mission, and plans for its future.

Board Composition

The board has 12 trustees: 6 pastors and 6 laymen. The Camp Corporation elects two pastors and two laymen each year for three-year terms. Trustees serve on behalf of the Corporation churches: the churches in fellowship with the Minnesota Association of Regular Baptist Churches that give financially to the Minnesota Regular Baptist Camp Corporation each year.

Two kinds of trustees

The board includes both pastors and laymen (church members who are not pastors). Each brings something the other can't, and the camp needs both.

Pastor Trustees

Pastor trustees keep the board grounded in prayer and Scripture. They look after the spiritual health of the camp family and keep Bass Lake connected to the churches it serves.

Lay Trustees

Lay trustees bring practical know-how from fields like finance, law, facilities, strategic planning, business, and the trades. The skills they use every day at work keep camp running well and on solid footing for years to come.

Much of the real work happens between meetings, as trustees pray, ask questions, and think problems through so the board can decide wisely together.

What you can count on

  • • Orientation and mentoring: An orientation when you begin, and a mentor to help you settle into the role.
  • • Brotherhood in ministry: Fellow trustees who pray, plan, and serve alongside you.
  • • Kingdom joy: Watching campers and staff come to Christ and grow in Him.

Who Can Serve

We're looking for men who love the Lord and care about this camp. If you've never served on a board, that's all right. You don't need a seminary degree or a business title. You need a servant's heart and a willingness to use the gifts God has given you.

What we look for

  • Spiritually mature and growing in Christ
  • Burdened to see campers and their families come to Christ
  • Eager to help staff and volunteers grow as servants of Christ
  • Emotionally steady, with sound business judgment

Bylaw Requirements

To serve as a trustee, a man must:

  • Have lived in Minnesota for at least one year as a member or pastor of a church in fellowship with the MARBC.
  • Be a member of a Corporation church, and remain one for as long as he serves.
  • Attend his local church faithfully and be in good fellowship with it.

How to Get Involved

Serving as a trustee is mission-driven, so start with prayer. From there, the process is straightforward, and someone will walk with you through each step.

  1. 1
    Pray and prepare

Ask the Lord whether He wants you, or someone you know, to serve. Read our trustee guide, Sketching the Future. Talk with a current trustee or your pastor by December 31.

  2. 2
    Submit a form

Laymen: A pastor may nominate a man from his church, or a man may nominate himself, using the Lay Trustee Nomination Form. Nominations are due at least one month before the Annual Meeting.

Pastors: Any eligible pastor who leads a Corporation church and supports camping ministry can use the Pastor's Interest Form.

  3. 3
    The Nomination Committee follows up

Every lay nominee needs a sponsor (a current trustee or pastor of a Corporation church). The committee confirms qualifications, considers up to ten nominees, and places up to five names on the ballot. For pastors, at least two names are placed on the ballot.

  4. 4
    The election

Each March at the Annual Meeting of the Corporation Churches, certified messengers elect two pastor trustees and two lay trustees. Learn About Messengers →
